Write to Learn

Our seminars provide a great introduction to a lot of different topics, but participants will often have different cruxes that are not investigated in those seminars. This group is meant to fill that gap and help people dive deeper into effective altruism, philosophy, and relevant cause areas.

We think a group structure will help us stay accountable, find good topics to write about, source readings and people to help us learn about those topics, and get feedback on our work. Having good writing, especially work posted on the EA Forum, can help you build a reputation in the EA community and find work and learning opportunities.

Apply at any time. For updates, please subscribe to our mailing list and join our Slack.

Each week we’ll have a 1-hour long meeting to check in on progress, provide feedback, and continue working. When you finish a paper, the group will also help you identify and investigate your new topic. Full program details can be found here.

Who Should Apply?

The seminar is open to Effective Altruism at Georgia Tech members who have completed the EA Introductory Seminar. The EA In-Depth Seminar is recommended but not required. Other seminars may help you get a working knowledge that you can draw on but are also not required.

We recommend applying to this program if you:

  • Want to make a large positive impact through your career, giving, or volunteering

  • Can commit 3 hours a week to investigating and writing about your topic, in addition to the weekly 1-hour discussions

  • Can attend at least 3 out of every 4 weekly discussion sessions

We are committed to building a diverse group of members. We strongly encourage interested students to apply regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, ability, etc. We also encourage undergraduate, graduate, and professional students, as well as individuals from all intellectual backgrounds and majors to apply.
